A tourist lost her life at Playa Los Naranjos on Wednesday, a day after a similar incident was reported at Playa Plataforma.
Emergency services were alerted about 6:30 pm regarding the disappearance of a female German tourist at the beach, located about 30 minutes east of Puerto Escondido in Santa María Colotepec.
Nicola Albertina Menges, 65, was swimming in the open ocean when she was apparently swept away by a strong rip current.
Lifeguards and other authorities conducted a search, but to no avail. On Thursday morning her body washed up on the shore.
State authorities are investigating Menges’ drowning, as well as that of Irishman Patrick Smith, who met a similar fate Tuesday afternoon at Playa Plataforma.
The Puerto Escondido Lifeguard corps urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution when entering the ocean.
