Whale watching season will begin Dec. 15: Semarnat

The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) announced on Monday the dates of the 2022-2023 whale watching season.

In accordance with official guidelines and specifications, whale watching areas were selected taking into consideration the time and area of ​​arrival of the whales and taking in to account the protection and conservation of their habitat.

“Whale watching areas and restricted areas have been determined, as well as the duration of the season by area ” where whale watching activities can take place.

The announcement indicated there are eight states that have whale observation areas this season. There are three such observation areas in Oaxaca.

Whales can be sighted in the state from Dec. 15 to March 21 in the Puerto Escondido and Huatulco areas. In the Puerto Ángel–Mazunte area, the season runs from Dec. 15 to March 31.

The migratory cetaceans can also be sighted off the coasts of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Jalisco, Sinaloa, Sonora and Guerrero.
