The numbers are in, and the tourism sector in Oaxaca performed even better than expected during the Día de Muertos holiday.
It was just over a week ago that the state tourism ministry announced its expectations for the Day of the Dead long weekend of celebrations. It predicted that Puerto Escondido would receive 13,848 visitors, and the state 84,883.
Now that festivities are officially over, Sectur Oaxaca reported that the state’s three main destinations, Puerto Escondido, Huatulco and Oaxaca city, once again captivated visitors during the holiday.
Tourism revenues were estimated at 307 million pesos (US $15.7 million) from 91,659 foreign and domestic tourists.
In Puerto Escondido, hotel occupancy rates were 55%, and the influx of 14,571 recorded visitors generated revenues of 41 million pesos.
Occupancy rates in Bahías de Huatulco were 64%, with a reported arrival of 23,100 visitors who spent 136 million pesos.
In Oaxaca city, a total of 53,988 people visited its cemeteries and other related events between October 28 and November 1, representing occupancy rates of 82% and estimated revenues of 130 million pesos.
