The state surfing championships were held last weekend at Los Naranjos beach, Ventanilla, in the municipality of Santa Maria Colotepec, about 15 minutes east of Puerto Escondido.

The goal was to select the delegation that will represent the state in the upcoming Electrolit National Surfing Championship 2022, to take place in Playa Linda, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, from November 2 to 20.

The organization of the tournament was carried out by a resurgent Surf Association of the State of Oaxaca A.C. (ASEO) with the support of the Mexican Federation of Surfing A.C. (Femex), as well as the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports of Oaxaca (INCUDE).

Disciplines at the event were women’s and men’s longboard, short board, bodyboard, stand up paddle, adapted surfing, skimboard, kneeboard, bodysurf and tandem.

As for categories, these are divided by age: children and youths from 11 to 18, open from 19 to 34, adults from 35 to 54, and seniors from 55 years of age and up.

In addition to mastering skills and abilities on the boards, participants had to be affiliated with Femex and pay a 300-peso fee per discipline.

During an information meeting on October 7, broadcast through Central Surf TV, ASEO general secretary Jacobo Jiménez Gómez mentioned that the Los Naranjos beach was chosen because it presents conditions similar to those of Playa Linda, adding that best scores will be rated and that no monetary or physical prize was contemplated because representing Oaxaca was a reward in itself.
