Federal highway 200, running from Salina Cruz in the east to Pinotepa Nacional in the west, has been blockaded for over 24 hours, according to reports on Monday morning.
Located at the junction with the road to the town of Zimatán, about 25 kilometers east of Huatulco, the blockade started on Sunday morning, set up by the people of Santiago Astata ri exert pressure on municipal authorities.
Protesters claim that Mayor Dorian Ricárdez has yet to deliver a 2-million-peso relief fund allocated by the federal government in response to the damage caused by Hurricane Agatha in the region late last May.
The people of Astata said that while the state government has addressed the problem from the outset, the solution — and delivery of the relief funds — now lies directly in the hands of the Santiago Astata municipal council.
