A Puerto Escondido hotel is the first in Mexico to accept payments in bitcoin, according to a report Saturday in the newspaper Milenio.

Hotel Tabachín del Puerto opened its doors in the 1990s, rapidly earning its current status as a classic in Puerto Escondido, hosting important personalities from the artistic, literary and sports worlds such as the writer Isabel Allende and the world surfing champion Kelly Slater.

The hotel also became renowned for breakfast gatherings where discussions focused on subjects of a literary or philosophical nature.

Located on a quiet lane behind Hotel Santa Fe on Zicatela Beach, the hotel maintains its essence in each of its fully equipped seven studio apartments.

Amenities include cable TV, air conditioning and a kitchen suitable for short stays or longer apartment living. Guests can also stay in touch and enjoy a speedy internet connection provided by Starlink.

The establishment earned its renowned reputation thanks to the artistic and eccentric tastes of its founder, Paul Cleaver.

After Cleaver’s death in 2012, Tabachín was closed for renovation, opening again in 2018. Always maintaining its iconic identity, art, mosaics and tiles, Tabachín modernized some areas adding new amenities like a swimming pool, garden, reading area, outdoor kitchen and a rooftop palapa.
