Fishermen from Puerto Escondido managed to free a whale that was first sighted tangled in fishing gear in the waters off the state of Guerrero.
The whale was seen on Dec. 13 by Zihuatanejo boater Víctor Cano, who reported that the adult humpback whale was sighted on Majahua Beach in La Unión with gear entangled in its tail.
He conjectured that the net in question could possibly be a trammel net, whose use in open sea is illegal.
An attempt was made to help the whale by navy divers, Civil Protection vessels, and Zihuatanejo firefighters, but the animal’s restless behavior put the rescuers in danger of receiving a blow from its tail. The whale was also constantly submerging and resurfacing, all the while swimming and heading south.
On Saturday, Puerto Escondido fishermen aboard the vessels Ángel Mar and Laura managed to remove the fishing gear, consisting of rope and a float, still entangled in the whale’s tail.
