Friday was beach cleanup day in Puerto Escondido.
Authorities and residents of the municipalities of San Pedro Mixtepec and Santa María Colotepec gathered for the cleanup, whose purpose was to give both visitors and locals a garbage-free beach experience, while also encouraging visitors to avoid polluting the area.
Both municipal administrations invited citizens and tourism service providers to participate in the event, which kicked off on Zicatela Beach at the Las Manitas sculpture. Crews of volunteers then moved on to other beaches.
With regard to Bacocho, the only beach to boast a playa limpia, or clean beach, certification by the Mexican government, the San Pedro clean beaches committee reported that the area is cleaned on a daily basis.
During the holiday season, the committee reported that 348 kilograms of glass, 35 kilograms of aluminum and 30 kilograms of PET plastic were collected from Bacocho and recycled with the support of Recicladora Costa Verde Puerto Escondido and Comunidad NIT.
