Passenger traffic at the Puerto Escondido International Airport grew almost 41% in the first 10 months of the year, airport manager ASA said this week.

ASA, or Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares, stated that between January and October 2022, a total of 590,262 passengers traveled through the Puerto Escondido terminal, reflecting a growth of 40.9% when compared to the same period of 2021, when 418,946 people were recorded.

In terms of air operations, the terminal saw an increase of 25.5% during the period, going from 7,733 flights in 2021 to 9,706 this year.

Air cargo numbers were also up. The total came to 46,761 kilograms, which represents an increase of 9.2%, surpassing last year’s 42,812 kilos.

A major upgrade was planned for the airport this year but it appears those plans have been shelved. Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat announced in January 2020 that a new “world class” terminal would open in Puerto Escondido in 2022 at a cost of 328 million pesos (US $18 million at the time).

Designed by the architect Alberto Kalach, the terminal was to make use of solar energy and boast other environmentally-friendly and sustainable features, Mexico News Daily reported. A new parking lot was also planned and several other parts of the airport were to be upgraded.
