With the conclusion of the Puerto Escondido-Oaxaca highway beginning to look possible, already hectic traffic conditions in Puerto during the high season are only expected to worsen.
But a group of government officials and business owners are planning to address the issue before it becomes unmanageable.
A new traffic code is in the works, a result of the collaboration of the state highway police, San Pedro Mixtepec municipal authorities, hoteliers and taxi companies.
During a meeting last weekend, the highway police chief said that all traffic engineering projects must adhere to state and federal traffic codes and regulations.
Toribio López Sánchez added that, since Puerto Escondido is experiencing rapid growth, coupled with the highway that will connect the state capital with Puerto Escondido, the city must be prepared for the needs of more visitors, providing them safe and inclusive mobility.
He stated that all this requires planning, and a top priority is to raise awareness among all drivers.
Mayor Javier Cruz Jiménez acknowledged that an updated traffic code is a priority, as current traffic conditions are already a problem that could grow if solutions are not sought at this early stage for dealing with the growing influx of visitors.
What such a traffic code might look like was not revealed.
