The tourism industry in Puerto Escondido is not what it used to be, largely due to the effects of the Covid pandemic and greater international awareness of the city as a tourism destination.
And a recent survey by a local municipality has provided some interesting revelations about the source and demographics of those visitors.
As the summer vacation period drew to an end, the tourism office of San Pedro Mixtepec carried out a series of surveys among vacationers, with the goal of better understanding the type of tourists visiting Puerto Escondido, along with their preferences.
Those interviewed were polled on an array of subjects that included their place of origin, how long they were staying here, age range, and what places they liked the most during their stay.
With regard to domestic tourism, Puerto Escondido is a big draw for residents of Mexico and Oaxaca cities: 40% and 35% of the respondents cited those towns as their places of origin, respectively.
Of the remaining 25%, 5% said they came from Puebla. The same percentage stated Morelos as their state of origin.
Those results weren’t too surprising, but the origin of visitors from abroad might be seen as unexpected.
The survey found out that 30% of foreign visitors were from Argentina, 20% from the United States, 15% from Italy, 10% from Spain, 8% from France and 12% from other countries.
And international tourists are a lot younger than they used to be.
The largest age group represented by those polled were those aged 18 to 30, with women in the majority.
The San Pedro tourism office intends to use the information collected to help improve tourist services.
Attempts by El Sol to obtain more details about the results of the survey were not answered by municipal authorities.
