A national environmental organization has denounced pollution of the beaches in Puerto Escondido and elsewhere on the coast of Oaxaca.
René Sánchez Hernández, president of the National Ecologist Confederation in Oaxaca, explained that beachside hotels lack wastewater treatment facilities that are needed to avoid contamination of coastal waters with fecal matter or heavy metals.
Sánchez said the situation repeats along the Pacific coast, contributing to the “severe contamination” of beaches from Puerto Escondido to Puerto Ángel.
He said that in recent months dead fish have been found on beaches in the area, a red flag in terms of the presence of pollutants in the water.
The National Ecologist Confederation asked that authorities pay prompt attention to the situation that not only affects the environment, but can also negatively impact people.
Sánchez remarked that keeping beaches clean is an urgent matter, as is the correct processing of wastewater, for which he called for the correct application of environmental regulations.
