The federal Ministry of Transportation has issued a statement warning motorists that the still under-construction Puerto Escondido-Oaxaca highway is closed to all vehicular traffic.
Drivers have begun using the long-awaited highway, reporting travel times of just three to five hours between Puerto and the state capital, rather less than the six hours the journey takes using the existing routes through San José del Pacífico or Sola de Vega.
Starting April 1, the highway “is closed in its entirety because there are sections with highly dangerous construction activities” where the safety of motorists cannot be guaranteed, the ministry said.
The restriction was issued with the aim of avoiding accidents and guaranteeing the safety of the personnel working on the site.
