On the eve of what is expected to be one of the most successful and busy winter vacation seasons in recent years, authorities in the beach destination of Mazunte say they are confident that conditions are ideal for visitors to have a safe and pleasant stay.
Mazunte municipal agent Gaudencio Cortés Martínez told the newspaper Noticias de Oaxaca in an interview that a security operation has already been planned for the vacation period, entailing the participation of the municipal and state police, the navy and the National Guard.
Those security forces will complement the services provided by eight lifeguards and two traffic police, who will work to avoid traffic jams on the main street, guiding tourists to parking areas.
Cortés added that the tranquility of visitors will also be guaranteed by the coordination of local authorities with several local committees.
This tourist safety operation will kick off on Dec. 19.
After the success of the Jazz Festival, hotel occupancy is expected to be at its peak in the coming weeks – mainly from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1 – given the number of bookings already made.
Along with the Magical Town of Mazunte, the municipality of Santa María Tonameca has other attractive beaches such as San Agustinillo, Agua Blanca and La Ventanilla.
According to information from the Tourism Ministry, these beaches are watched over by 16 lifeguards; however, during the holiday season, the number will increase by 50%.
Mazunte is located about one hour east of Puerto Escondido.
