An Irish citizen drowned Tuesday afternoon at Playa Plataforma, located in Tierra Blanca, about 20 minutes east of Puerto Escondido.
The Puerto Escondido lifeguard corps received the incident report at around 5:30 p.m., responding with the deployment of two of its members.
Upon their arrival at Playa Plataforma, the man later identified as Patrick Smith was found lying on the beach with no vital signs.
Smith, a resident of Brisas de Zicatela, was in the area with a group of people looking at some pieces of land for sale. After the main purpose of the trip was over, the group decided to walk down and take a dip in the ocean, according to media reports.
But Smith noticed that two youngsters who were part of the group were being carried away from the shore. In an attempt to get their attention and warn them to stay closer to land, he was dragged away by the current.
His body later washed up on the beach.
After municipal police officers from Santa María Colotepec arrived, the regional state Attorney General’s Office was notified of the incident and will investigate.
