Flooding of beach infrastructure and the collapse of the foundation of a navigation beacon are some of the effects of big waves caused by the groundswell event currently happening along the Oaxaca coast.
The Puerto Escondido lifeguard corps alerted swimmers to be extremely careful and not swim on the beaches of Puerto Escondido, to avoid any accidents due to the strong waves.
While no casualties have been reported since the groundswell warning was announced, some flooding and property damage have been recorded.
On Marinero beach, the strong waves knocked down a lifeguard tower, which had only just been moved 20 meters inland as a precaution.
“We just moved it, and a huge wave, Marinero’s largest, hit the tower with force,” a lifeguard told Estado Actual.
In the Cerro Hermoso and Roca Blanca beaches of the municipality of Villa de Tututepec damages were also reported, mainly in beachfront cabins and palapas that were flooded in the onslaught of the strong waves.
In Cerro Hermoso, the force of the breaking waves on the breakwater demolished the foundation of a navigation light tower, which was about to collapse.
After the incident, municipal Civil Protection closed all access to the breakwater area, prohibiting fishing and swimming at the same time.
