A two-time mayoral candidate in Santa María Colotepec, Saúl Martínez Figueroa, was shot to death Monday in downtown Puerto Escondido.
According to information from security forces, the murder took place around 11:00 a.m. on Avenida Alfonso Pérez Gazga between Banamex and a kindergarten.
The victim’s body was left lying next to the driver’s door of the truck in which he was traveling.
Paramedics arrived at the scene soon after, only to find that Martínez was dead.
On May 18, Martínez was the victim of another armed attack; on that occasion he escaped unharmed, as he was inside an armored truck.
Martínez ran twice for mayor of Santa María Colotepec, in 2019 and again in 2022, but did not win either election.
