Municipal authorities in San Pedro Mixtepec have denounced the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater at Playa Punta Colorada, located just to the west of Bacocho Beach.
The municipality’s federal zone director, Damián Victoria Rodríguez, described what is happening at Punta Colorada as ecocide.
Part of the problem is due to the repeated dumping of sewage by tanker trucks. Victoria said trucks arrive from other municipalities, including San Pedro Pochutla, Mazunte and Zipolite, to name a few, to dump their wastewater.
This is on top of the discharge of wastewater from Puerto Escondido.
San Pedro Mixtepec Mayor Javier Cruz Jiménez said measures will be taken to address the issue, including placing municipal surveillance in the area.
The mayor added that a formal complaint will be made before the State Water Commission.
