The state tourism ministry, Sectur Oaxaca, predicts that Day of the Dead celebrations this year will bring more than 13,000 visitors to Puerto Escondido.
Sectur anticipates that revenues for Día de Muertos could be as much as 293 million pesos (US $14.8 million) in the state’s three main destinations, Puerto Escondido, Huatulco and Oaxaca city.
All three are expected to welcome 84,883 domestic and international visitors during the period, which runs from October 29 to November 1.
It is expected that an additional 73 million pesos will be generated this season compared to last year and that visitor numbers will be up by some 19,500.
For Puerto Escondido, the ministry estimated hotel occupancy rates to be close to 51%, representing 13,848 visitors, who will spend around 38 million pesos, 11 million pesos more than the previous year.
Estimates indicate that 20,798 tourists will visit Huatulco, representing hotel occupancy rates of 65%, and an economic spillover of 129 million pesos, an increase of 34 million pesos compared to 2021.
The city of Oaxaca will be the most visited destination with an expected 50,238 tourists and hotel occupancy of 82%. Tourism revenue estimates are 126 million pesos, 29 million pesos more than last year.
“Oaxaca has it all and Sectur Oaxaca invites you to discover it by yourself, in this tradition that is recognized in the country and the world; that is kept alive in the eight regions and each of its municipalities,” the state government said in a statement.
