Puerto Escondido residents raised the alarm on Sunday when a 2.7-meter-long crocodile was sighted close to two busy beaches.
The wild animal was seen by residents in La Lagunita, close to the El Regadío bridge area and smack in the middle of Puerto, between Zicatela and Playa Principal.
Municipal Civil Protection officials from Santa María Colotepec coordinated the capture and transportation of the croc with the NGOs SOS Cocodrilos and Red de Humedales de la Costa (Coastal Wetlands Network).
In a later statement, local authorities reported that “the capture and relocation [of the crocodile] was carried out as a preventive measure, to avoid accidents and guarantee the safety of the public.”
The crocodile was transported and released back to its natural habitat.
