The environmentalist organization Costa Unida took to Zicatela Beach on Wednesday to protest the construction of a building it claims will affect the structure of the beach, adversely affecting its world-famous waves.
The protesters included environmentalists, surfers and Puerto residents, all carrying banners saying Salvemos Puerto and Salvemos Zicatela (Let’s save Puerto and Zicatela).
The new building, they said, will have a negative impact on the area because it is being built on the sand, very close to the water and within the federal zone.
The group is demanding to be shown the permit given by the federal environment ministry to verify under what conditions it was issued in the first place.
The protesters are also asking that oceanography studies be taken into account to guarantee the quality of the waves and the beach.
Costa Unida mentioned that they have already approached authorities in Santa María Colotepec, who have also issued permits allowing construction projects on the beach.
