Bacocho Beach is the only beach in Puerto Escondido with a playa limpia, or clean beach, certification by the Mexican government, and civil society groups are carrying out several actions to preserve that status, according to municipal Playas Limpias director Lidia García Espinoza.
This week she said the committee she leads is fortunately not the only one involved in the conservation of the beach.
García explained that during the committee’s most recent series of cleaning activities she was contacted by the scuba divers’ cooperative Buzos de Puerto Angelito, who took advantage of their ability to dive several meters deep and collaborated in extracting the garbage accumulated on the seabed.
In addition, the Playas Limpias Committee has been obtaining samples to verify the quality of the sea water, to be sent to a certified laboratory for bacteriological analysis.
García said that as a certified beach, it is mandatory to monitor water quality every three or four months, and make the results public.
The certification standards also entail sanitation activities, when required.
García said that clean-up work must be carried out alongside other activities such as bird monitoring, beach sand cleaning and identification of plastic waste in sediments. These, she concluded, are necessary for the conservation of the beach itself as well as its status as a certified clean beach.
