It’s carnival season, and Puerto Escondido is ready to celebrate on Saturday, March 18 with a series of events.
The Agencia Municipal Facebook page has been sharing posters of the different events scheduled to take place on Saturday, all listed below.
The main event starts at 5:30 p.m. at Zicatela Beach, where floats and groups of people, kown as comparsas and batucadas, will begin a parade that will take them to the Adoquín, Avenida Oaxaca, Calle 8a Norte and Calle 3a Poniente, concluding at the Agencia Municipal.
At 8:00 p.m., the Carnaval’s Reina Drag, or Drag Queen, will be chosen in a gala, with 10 contestants showing off their best carnival regalia in a pageant and then competing in order to determine who offered the best show. Other awards will be given for the best dressed and best lip sync of the night.
After the Drag Queen show, the best comparsa and batucada of the Carnaval will be awarded based on their enthusiasm, choreography and costumes. Comparsas are groups of costumed people dancing along a carnival’s route, while batucadas are musical ensembles playing live for the comparsas and carnival-goers’ enjoyment.
The last event of the evening will be a concert by the Los Primos de Guerrero band at the Agencia Municipal.
