Local environmental groups have been expressing concern about the conditions of the beaches of Puerto Escondido, but there is now a new focus on the breakwater at Playa Principal.
Desiderio Ortiz Magaña, of the civil society organization Destino Puerto Escondido, told Estado Actual that all the natural elements found in Puerto could deteriorate or be depleted in a short period of time if the proper care and attention to their conservation is not implemented.
Another member of the group, Emilio Burget de León, touched on the breakwater that was built in Bahía Principal a few years ago, which the environmental group says has obstructed water currents, inhibiting their natural flushing effect.
Destino Puerto Escondido intends to look into the removal of the pier so that marine currents continue to flow and allow the bay to recover its natural appearance.
The activist also remarked on the issue of sewage accumulating in certain parts of the beach, caused by the lack of efficient wastewater management and the ensuing discharges into Arroyo Regadío, which drain onto the beach and into the ocean during the rainy season.
Destino Puerto Escondido plans to present a working plan involving the general public and local authorities.
