Beachgoers were greeted with a gruesome sight Wednesday morning when a body was sighted floating close to the shore at Zicatela and Marinero beaches.
The first reports were recorded at around 8 a.m., when some people spotted a body floating near the lighthouse. Lifeguards arrived at the area, but found nothing.
It was almost four hours later, at around around 11:30 a.m., when sightings of the corpse were reported again, this time in front of Zicatela beach. The wind and the sea current soon carried the body close to the rocks of Playa Marinero, where it could finally be brought ashore.
Officials cordoned off the area and removed the body, transporting it to the municipal morgue, where an autopsy will be performed and the cause of death determined.
The identity of the male corpse remains unknown but the man’s age has been estimated between 35 and 40. The body showed no apparent signs of decomposition.
Authorities have also reported that there are currently no open missing persons investigations.
